Who doesn’t know of fairy tales and myths? Since we were young, we were all told so many different stories by our parents, teachers, and nannies. Sometimes, some of these stories lasted in our hearts for a very long time, making us believe something that’s very unrealistic. And yet, with our very innocent and youthful hearts, we believe so much and we even have faith in these stories like they could possibly come true.
Fairy tales with giants, dwarves, witches, wizards, fairies, elves, and princes who will save the princesses from danger are always very enjoyable to listen to and make believe in. But apart from these common characters of fairy tales and bedtime stories, there are also some characters which are very lovable and believable despite the mystic origins and unrealistic claims that they have. One of these is the unicorn.
We all know what a unicorn is. In the simplest image, a unicorn is a white horse with a single horn in the middle of the forehead. Unicorns also come in different variations based on the country of origin. While the most popular depiction of the unicorn is what was earlier stated, there are also some images of the unicorn which are variable based on the different stories which are locally known in the area. For instance, in some countries in Asia like China and Japan, the unicorn is a mix of different kinds of animals, like a chimera. But it has that signature horn in the middle of the forehead which makes the natives say that it’s a unicorn.
There are also other countries which depict the unicorn with two horns, believing that the mythical creature is actually a similar animal to a bull. There are also other variations of the unicorn that shows it to be similar to a deer, antelope, ram, or other two-horned forest creatures. They say that the drawings with only one horn are caused by the side view illustration which completely covers the horn on the other side.
Regardless of the reality in unicorns, they are still very mythical creatures that we all would like to believe. Among all wild mythological creatures, only the unicorn is so well-accepted and loved by the audience, especially by children, because of the gentle and kind nature of the creature. It is said that the horn of the unicorn has the power to transform even the dirtiest and muddiest water to crystal clear and potable spring water. It is also said to have healing properties which allow the unicorn to revive the wounded and tend to the sick.
Some depictions of the unicorn have been used in popular culture, especially in coats of arms. Many European countries use unicorns as the creatures in their coats of arms such as Scotland, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, and Hungary. The mythical creature is indeed a very popular animal and it seems to live in the hearts of many people who until today wonder whether this myth is only just a myth.
