The preservation of wildlife is one of the biggest goals of mankind today. It has only been recently that man has become conscious of the gradual destruction of the natural world and the resources that it has provided for human consumption. In order to preserve what is still remaining of the endangered world of wildlife, people have created organizations which aim to uphold such objectives.

Many world organizations focus on the preservation of natural resources such as forests, endangered animals, and natural habitats. Some of these organizations also act to revive the deteriorating condition of Mother Nature by reforestation and prohibition of activities that abuse natural resources like illegal logging, cyanide fishing, and urbanization.

One of the world-famous organizations which aim to restore wildlife is the Ducks Unlimited Organization. The main objective of the organization is to preserve wetlands and other natural habitats of waterfowl, other animals, and humans as well. The organization is composed of more than 750,000 members and operates mainly in the United States and Canada. It has a strong principle to uphold the conservation of wetlands and waterfowl. Although it is non-profitable, the organization collects annual membership fees from its members as a fund-raising campaign to provide for the enactment of the organization’s objectives and aims.  Supporter often show their affiliation by ordering Ducks Unlimited checks.

Ducks Unlimited was founded by Joseph Knapp, E. H. Low, and Robert Winthrop on January 30, 1938. These fowl-hunting sportsmen saw the plummet of waterfowl population and the destruction of their natural habitat during the Dust Bowl in 1937. The same year of its establishment, Ducks Unlimited branched out to Canada, and extended to Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and other Latin American countries.

In addition to waterfowl habitat preservation, Ducks Unlimited also helps in improving the quality of wetlands and maintaining their natural cleanliness and water flow. Wetlands are contributors to good water quality because they purify the ground water, reduce floods, and prevent soil erosion. Wetlands are also important habitats for many species of wildlife, and without them many animals will die. Because of the activities of Ducks Unlimited, almost 13 million acres of waterfowl habitat in North America alone have been conserved and protected from destructive forces.

The funds accumulated by the organization legitimately go to wildlife habitat conservation. The organization makes $200 million in revenues annually, and 87% of this directly goes to habitat conservation. Most of the members of the organization are hunters who have high regard for the welfare of waterfowls. Similar to the objective of their organization’s founders, these hunters want to maintain the natural habitat of waterfowls to keep waterfowl hunting a legitimate and pleasurable sport. The organization also promotes the continuation of safe and regulated waterfowl hunting, enabling hunters to have fun in their hobby while avoiding any harm to the waterfowls and their habitat.

The organization has primary activities that encourage and sustain waterfowl habitat conservation like restoring grasslands, replanting forests, restoring watersheds, educating landowners to conserve natural resources, conservation easements or the partial purchase of private wetlands, and direct purchase of wetlands. Their major targets are endangered waterfowl habitats in North America, three of which are the Prairie Pothole Region, the Central Valley or Coastal California, and the Western Boreal Forest in Canada.

There are many organizations that promote wildlife welfare and the conservation and preservation of natural habitat, but Ducks Unlimited personal checks show that it is one of the most successful organizations that have been able to show remarkable progress in maintaining wildlife welfare. We, the ordinary people, do not necessarily need to be members of such organizations in order to contribute to the good intentions of these organizations. In our own simple ways, we can help save the environment, as long as we have enough love and care in us to think first of the benefit of Mother Nature before our own.
