Who doesn’t know of fairy tales and myths where dragons were villains that flew in the sky, causing terror upon many, and burning down houses? Of course, dragons are very popular because of their mystic identity and the powers that they have. They are known to be enormous, winged, fire-breathing, lizard-like, ferocious creatures.  This makes them a perfect choice for a personal check design.

The word dragon comes from the Greek word “drakon” which means serpent of huge size or water snake. They are dinosaur-like, and their variety is vast. Generally, dragons have two legs which are used for walking, and two claws, much like a tyrannosaurus rex. A dragon with no feet is called a wyvern. Many dragons are made into sculptures, displayed as ornamental figures in many places. While dragons may have so many interpretations, their origin is not so different. There are two major cultures from where dragons are said to have come from – the Europeans and the Chinese.

European dragons are known as serpent-like creatures. They live in underground caves where they are isolated, far from the sight of humans. They are related to magic and they are said to have magical powers themselves. Their blood is known to have magical properties as seen in European folklore. Usually, European dragons are guards of magnificent treasures and heroes are known to slay them. There are so many varieties of the European dragon. As a matter of fact, almost every European country has its own dragon icon. Romans, Germans, Celtics, Austrians, Portugese, Italians, and many other European denominations have certain interpretations and mythologies about dragons and dragon-like creatures. Nonetheless, most of them portray evil characters and are slain by heroes.

Contrary to the evil European dragon, the Chinese revere dragons as god-like creatures with mystic powers and great strength. Chinese dragons are also symbols of good luck, and can also be icons of great wisdom and knowledge. Chinese use dragons as a comparison for humans and their abilities or achievements. A man would want his son to be “like a dragon” which only means that he wants his son to have strength, good luck, and wisdom. The Chinese dragon’s origin of great power came from its emblem in Chinese history. In the older years, dragons were symbols of the Chinese Emperor. They used dragons with different numbers of claws. The five-clawed dragon usually represented the highest position like the Emperor or the Son of Heaven. Meanwhile the four-clawed and three-clawed dragons are used for lower entities. During the Qing dynasty, dragons were even used as icons on the national flag. Chinese dragons are also known to have power to control the weather, like the rain and storm. Their power is insurmountable that is why they respected and given tribute by the Chinese.

Today, dragons are considered very ornamental. Chinese dragon figurines are said to be good luck charms in the household, while European dragon statues and sculptures depict mysterious and fantastical ideologies. No matter what kind of dragon it is or where it came from, one thing is for certain, dragons are totally awesome.  Dragon personal checks are growing in popularity.

In the modern age, dragons still possess the same reputation as from history. European dragons are fierce and evil, while Chinese dragons are powerful and wise. Some of the popular European dragon icons and characters that are known today are the dragons from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the dragons from Lord of the Rings, the dragon from Shrek, and other dragons seen in movies and cartoons like Eragon, Dungeons and Dragons, and many more. Chinese dragons, on the other hand, include the little dragon from Mulan named Mushu, the dragon of the Zodiac, and dragons from many Japanese cartoons like Dragon Ball Z and the sort.
