Disney recreated this fairy tale into a film in the year 1991. An old inventor named Maurice who had three daughters wandered astray and sought refuge in the Beast’s castle one rainy night. He meets a group of moving household utensils, and was captured by the Beast who took him as a prisoner. Maurice pleaded that he be set free. The Beast accepted it, but he took his third daughter in his place, Belle. Belle is a very beautiful young woman with a very kind heart, and she had many admirers. One of these is Gaston, a very boisterous man with a tied long hair and a nasty attitude. When Maurice asked the villagers especially Gaston to help him save his daughter, the villagers thought he was going crazy and ignored his cries.
Belle was kept in the castle by the Beast. But he did not take her as prisoner, instead as a guest. Belle met the moving household utensils who were a candle (Lumiere), a clock (Cogsworth), and a teapot (Mrs. Potts). One night, the Beast asked Belle to have dinner with him, which she greatly refused. The Beast was furious and he told his servants not to let her eat.
As Belle wandered in the castle, she found a rose, which was actually the hourglass of the Beast’s curse. When the rose wilts, the Beast will die, and the servants will remain as utensils forever, but Belle did not know this. When the Beast saw her there, he chased her away furiously.
One night, Belle tried to escape, but was confronted by a pack of wolves in her attempt. The Beast ran to her rescue, and fought the wolves with all his might. He ended up wounded, and Belle tended to him when they had returned to the castle. This was when Belle and the Beast started to become closer, and Belle saw the goodness in the Beast’s heart.
The Beast prepared a grandiose dinner and a ballroom for Belle. They ate together and they danced, while belle wore her signature Disney gown, the yellow layered princess gown which is ever so memorable. When Belle looked in a magic mirror which the Beast gave him, she saw her father dying, and Belle tried to save him. Although the Beast knew that Belle was going to leave and he was going to die that night, he let her run free.
When Belle saved her father, the villagers confronted her and said her father was crazy. But Belle showed the magic mirror and displayed the Beast to the villagers. They went to the castle to kill him, but Belle ran after them to stop them. The Beast and Gaston get into a fight, and Gaston stabs the Beast in the back. Belle runs to him and cries, saying that she loves him, right before the rose completely wilts. The spell is broken, the prince and his servants return to human form, and Belle and the Prince live happily ever after.
The film is one of Disney’s most popular cartoon movies and it is recognized as a classic. Until today, the Disney adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is the symbol by which many people see the fairy tale. The most memorable symbol of the film is Belle’s yellow princess gown, which is a symbol of Beauty and her everlasting love story with the Beast.
